Moving house is already a lot to manage. But if you have a home full of plants, there’s one more thing to think about: how do you move them without hurting them?
Plants can be surprisingly sensitive to sudden changes in temperature, light, watering, and handling. A little preparation can make the move much easier on them.
Start Preparing a Few Days Before
Don’t wait until moving day to think about your plants.
Remove dead leaves, trim damaged branches, and check the pots for cracks or loose parts. This is also a good time to decide which plants actually need to come with you.
For larger plants, make sure there is enough space for them to be transported safely.
Don’t Overwater Before Moving
It might seem like giving your plants extra water will help them survive the journey, but that’s not always a good idea.
Overwatering can make pots much heavier and may cause water to spill during transportation. Water your plants according to their normal needs and avoid leaving them soaking wet before the move.
Protect the Pots
Plant pots can crack or break while being loaded and transported.
Wrap ceramic or fragile pots with bubble wrap or protective material. Smaller pots can be placed securely inside sturdy boxes with cushioning around them so they don’t move around.
Protect Leaves and Branches
Large leaves and delicate branches can easily get damaged when plants are squeezed between boxes and furniture.
Use soft protective material around particularly delicate plants. For larger plants, gently secure loose branches without bending or tying them too tightly.
Keep Plants Away From Heavy Items
Plants shouldn’t be treated like ordinary boxes.
Avoid placing heavy cartons on or around them. They need enough space to prevent leaves, stems, and pots from getting crushed during transportation.
Think About Temperature
Extreme heat and cold can stress plants, especially during long-distance moves.
Whenever possible, avoid leaving them exposed to harsh weather for long periods. Keep them protected during loading, transportation, and unloading.
Give Them Time to Adjust
Once you reach your new home, don’t immediately start moving every plant around.
Place them somewhere suitable and give them time to adjust to their new surroundings. Keep their watering routine consistent and gradually find the right spot based on their light requirements.
